When choosing a wedding wine, the three criteria you will need to consider are:

1. That the wines pair well with the menu

2. That they please your guests

3. That they fit the budget

Generally speaking, you will need to provide one type of red wine and one type of white wine. Many couples also choose to serve a sparkling wine for toasts or for a champagne reception.

Use the Venue’s Wine or Bring Your Own?

One of the biggest decisions you will have to make is whether you will use the venue’s wine or bring your own. This will have a significant impact on your budget, so it’s important to think carefully before making your choice.

Using the venue’s wine may prove to be quite cost-effective. Venues will only charge you for what is consumed. What’s more, you may decide to keep costs down by putting a cap on the number of bottles to be used. Another benefit of this option is that the venue will most likely have a wine expert who you can help you select the best wines for your special day.

On the other hand, many couples are choosing to bring their own wine. However, it is worth remembering that if you go for the BYOB route then the venue will most likely charge a corkage fee, and this can vary wildly between venues. The corkage fee covers a range of things including:

• Chilling/storing bottles in advance

• Staff serving the wine

• Use of the venue’s glassware

• Potential breakages

• Disposal of glass bottles

• VAT
